A plain-language list of the words you'll see in MahjOS, from “ruleset” to “tier” to “kiosk.”

Here are the words you may run into, in everyday language:

  1. Group (or club) — your circle of players. You can belong to more than one.
  2. Event — a game, social, or tournament you can sign up for.
  3. RSVP — letting the host know you're coming.
  4. Waitlist — the line you join when an event is full; you move up if a spot opens.
  5. Ticket tier — one of the price choices for a paid event (for example, member, guest, or “includes lunch”).
  6. Card — the National Mah Jongg League card of legal hands, which changes each year.
  7. Hand — one winning combination of tiles from the card.
  8. Ruleset — the scoring rules an event uses (point values and special hands).
  9. Seating — who sits at which table for each round.
  10. Round — one stretch of play in a tournament; a tournament has several.
  11. Director / Admin / Owner — the roles that let someone run events or manage a group.
  12. Kiosk — a tablet at the door players use to check in.
  13. Display — the big TV or projector screen that shows tables and standings.
